I think that the best meaning of the word "literal" is something that is actual. You can use it in the sense of meaning the exact truth in a certain circumstances. When you say literally, you are not exaggerating. If something is literal it is the complete thought in the perfectly explained by that thought. I use "literally" when i want to get my point across. When something is needed to be explained in a perfect manner, people will say literally to show exactly what they mean.
